An online store for gold has a problem that most shops never encounter: the purchase price of the goods changes minute by minute. Anyone still showing the 8 a.m. gold price at noon may, in the worst case, end up selling below the purchase price. On top of that come three different tax logics within a single product range, and customers who, when four-figure amounts are involved, want one question answered first: can I trust this dealer?

For the precious metal dealer Goldmichi from Rostock, we built a WooCommerce store that solves exactly these three requirements. How, this case study on [goldmichi.de](https://www.goldmichi.de/) shows.

## Starting Point: A One-Pager for a Business That Had Long Outgrown It

Michael Bastian, known in Rostock as “Goldmichi,” has been trading precious metals since 2005. His father started the business in 1997, and the son now runs it in the second generation. The company buys and sells gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, as well as jewelry and dental gold. At his Rostock office on Wiener Platz, he runs an over-the-counter business: there, customers can buy precious metals up to 1,999.99 euros anonymously and in cash, in accordance with Section 3 of the German Anti-Money Laundering Act (GwG). Over 240 Google reviews with an average of 4.9 out of 5 stars show what his customers think of him.

Online, little of this was visible. The previous website was a one-pager introducing the over-the-counter business. No product range, no prices, no sales. Unless you were already coming to Rostock, there was nothing you could buy from Goldmichi.

The brief: a full-fledged online store for the complete product range, with prices that follow the market rate, a buy-back section, and the over-the-counter business as its own module, including appointment booking via Calendly.

## UI/UX and Design: Making Trust Visible

With precious metals, the person sells the product. That’s why Michael Bastian is visibly present on the website: with a photo, a personal address to visitors, and the story of the family business. The Google reviews are embedded, and the verification process for buy-backs is openly described, from the calibrated scale to the eddy current test.

For the product range, we built a custom visual world: individually designed icons instead of template symbols, and specially created category images for every product category, from the 1-gram gold bar category to jewelry. Product photography on a black background gives the store a recognition value that standard shops in this industry rarely have.

We even designed the 404 page instead of leaving it as the default. Details like this don’t decide revenue, but they show visitors that someone here works carefully. For a gold dealer, this exact impression is worth cold, hard cash.

## The Core Feature: Prices That Follow the Market Rate Every 10 Minutes

The gold price moves on every trading day. A store with static prices would either have to factor in high safety margins or bear the market risk itself. We wanted to spare Goldmichi both.

The solution: the store retrieves market rates for gold, silver, platinum, and palladium via the metalpriceapi.com API and recalculates all product prices every 10 minutes. The current rates are visible to visitors as a ticker on the website, complete with a timestamp. This transparency also works as a selling point: customers see that the price is based on the real market rate and isn’t a made-up number.

The raw market rate alone isn’t enough, though. Two sets of rules sit on top of it:

- **Rarity surcharges:** coins such as a Krugerrand from a specific year are worth more than their metal weight. For such products, defined surcharges are stored that build on top of the market value.
- **Downside protection:** if the rate falls, store prices fall with it. A floor price, however, ensures that Goldmichi never sells below its own purchase price. The pricing logic itself carries the market risk, so no one has to watch rates at night.

This architecture can be applied to other industries too. Wherever purchase prices fluctuate, whether raw materials, energy prices, or day-dependent quotas, the same principle works: an external data source, calculation rules, and automatic price updates in the store.

## Three Tax Logics in One Product Range

A precious metals store has to handle more tax complexity than a normal WooCommerce store:

- **Investment gold** is exempt from VAT under Section 25c of the German VAT Act (UStG). A gold bar is sold without VAT.
- **Silver, platinum, and palladium** are subject to the regular 19% VAT rate.
- **Purchased second-hand items**, such as coins acquired through buy-back, are handled via the margin scheme under Section 25a UStG. In this case, VAT is not shown on the invoice.

So depending on the product, a different logic applies, and it has to be correctly reflected in the store, at checkout, and on the invoice. Off-the-shelf plugins don’t cover this case cleanly, so we developed the tax logic ourselves. Every product carries its taxation type as a property, and everything else runs automatically.

## Buy-Back Calculator: Turning Visitors Into Sellers

Goldmichi sells precious metals, but he also buys them back extensively. The store reflects both directions.

At the product level, there’s a feature to offer an item directly for buy-back: anyone who owns, say, a Krugerrand can offer it to Goldmichi via the product page at that day’s buy-back value. On top of that, there’s a central buy-back calculator where visitors configure their items for buy-back and immediately see a live buy-back value, calculated from the same market rates as the selling prices.

The effect: the barrier to taking action drops. Anyone with coins or jewelry lying around at home gets an honest price indication before they call or book an appointment. And appointments for the over-the-counter business can be booked directly through the integrated Calendly booking system.

## Performance and GEO: Getting Found, Even by AI Systems

Honesty is part of any case study: the store runs on the customer’s existing server, and an upgrade wasn’t in the budget. Combined with the live rate lookups, that costs loading time. In our development environment, the store achieved a mobile score of 96 on PageSpeed Insights; on the customer’s server, mobile scores are above 80. The Core Web Vitals, Google’s metrics for real-world perceived loading speed, are passed. So the existing infrastructure delivers everything it realistically could.

Visibility in AI systems, often called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), was especially important to us. PageSpeed Insights now also checks Agentic Browsing, meaning whether AI agents can read a website without errors, find products, and reproduce information correctly. Goldmichi.de passes this test with 3 out of 3 points. In other words: if someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity where to buy gold anonymously in Rostock, Goldmichi has the technical prerequisites to be the answer.

On top of that comes the SEO groundwork that’s part of every one of our projects: clean category texts, an FAQ section with schema markup, structured product data, and up-to-date rate information directly on the website.

## Outlook: An In-House ERP for WooCommerce

The project continues. For Goldmichi, we’re currently developing a custom ERP system tailored exactly to his workflows, which will go live shortly. It makes purchasing, sales, and statistics transparent, and links store orders with transactions at the over-the-counter business. Inventory management and the online store are thus growing into a single system. Once it’s live, we’ll present it in detail in a dedicated article.

## Best Practices: What Store Owners Can Take Away From This Project

- Dynamic prices via API can be reliably implemented in WooCommerce. What matters is that the rules are defined in advance: surcharges, floor prices, and how to behave when rates move.
- Special tax cases belong in the concept before the first product page is built. Adding the margin scheme retroactively becomes expensive.
- A calculator is one of the strongest lead magnets a website can have. The buy-back calculator lowers the barrier to taking action because visitors get a price indication before they make contact.
- Agentic Browsing can already be tested today, among other ways via PageSpeed Insights. Anyone building a site now should factor in this test, since AI assistants are taking over a growing share of product searches.
- Trust is built through people and evidence. Show the owner, embed reviews, disclose verification processes. Especially with high-priced products, no one buys from an anonymous brand.
- A lot can be achieved even with an existing server. Passing the Core Web Vitals here was possible despite a live API and older infrastructure, because the theme and code are built lean.

## Online Store for Precious Metal Dealers with WooCommerce

What does an online store for precious metal dealers cost?

It depends on the scope: product range size, pricing logic, tax cases, buy-back features. The goldmichi.de project involved about three months of work and was in the low five figures (euros). In the initial consultation, we clarify what scope makes sense for your business.

How do market-based live prices work in WooCommerce?

The store retrieves rates via an external API, in goldmichi.de’s case every 10 minutes from metalpriceapi.com. A set of rules calculates the selling prices from this: market value plus defined surcharges, secured by a floor price so items are never sold below purchase price. Prices for all products update automatically.

How does an online store handle the margin scheme and VAT-exempt investment gold?

Via a custom tax logic at the product level. Every product carries its taxation type: VAT-exempt under Section 25c UStG for investment gold, 19% VAT for silver, platinum, and palladium, or the margin scheme under Section 25a UStG for purchased second-hand items. Checkout and invoicing automatically follow the respective logic.

What does Agentic Browsing mean for an online store?

AI assistants like ChatGPT or Perplexity visit websites to answer their users’ questions. Agentic Browsing describes how well such an AI agent can read and navigate a website. PageSpeed Insights now checks this too. A store that passes this test has the technical foundation to appear in AI answers as a source and purchase recommendation.

Can this kind of pricing logic also be applied to other industries?

Yes. The principle of an external data source, calculation rules, and automatic updates works everywhere prices depend on fluctuating factors: raw materials, energy, exchange rates, or day-dependent availability.
