# Format LinkedIn text: bold, italic, …

## What is a LinkedIn text formatter

LinkedIn has no bold button. Whoever types into the post field gets exactly one typeface in exactly one weight, no matter how important the statement is. That is precisely the gap a text formatter fills.

The tool swaps each letter for a character from the Unicode standard that looks like a bold, italic or decorated variant. These alphabets originally entered the standard for mathematical formulas. To LinkedIn they are perfectly ordinary text, which is why the look survives copying and pasting.

So you keep writing as normal. The **LinkedIn formatter** replaces the selected characters, you copy the result with one click and paste it into your LinkedIn post field. No sign-up, no installation, and your text never leaves your browser.

### Which font styles are available to you?

Unicode contains several complete alphabets that look like formatted text. The formatter above covers the variants that reliably display on LinkedIn:

- **Bold** for the first line of your post and for subheadings
- **Italic** for quotes, asides and subtle emphasis
- **Bold and italic combined** for individual key terms
- **Capitals** when a line should work like a label
- **Strikethrough** for before-and-after comparisons
- **Script, Fraktur, double-struck and monospace** as decorative accents

Everything you have selected can be turned back into normal letters via the Normalise button.

The biggest impact in the feed rarely comes from a playful font. It comes from a post having room to breathe and making sense immediately when skimmed.

### Structure works harder than typeface

- One thought per line, with a blank line in between
- Paragraphs of no more than three lines
- The first two lines decide whether someone clicks “see more”
- Bullet characters such as • or ✓ instead of long lists in running text
- Use emojis sparingly and always with the same meaning
- The structure helpers in the formatter place arrows, ticks, bullets and dividers in the right spot with one click.

## A few steps to a formatted LinkedIn post

The formatter at the very top needs neither an account nor a credit card. It is free to use because it was developed out of [our own need](https://4eck-media.de/en/blog/linkedin-as-a-self-experiment-12-principles-real-numbers/). Here is how:

                                                        1. Enter your text

Type your post directly into the field above or paste in a finished draft. The live preview next to it shows immediately how it will look in the LinkedIn feed.

                                                        2. Select and choose a style

Select the words that should stand out and click Bold, Italic, Capitals or one of the Unicode fonts. Use the structure helpers to add arrows, ticks and bullet points.

                                                        3. Copy and post

One click on Copy places the formatted text in your clipboard. In LinkedIn, paste it with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V – done.

                                                        4. Professioneller wirken

If you structure your texts yourself instead of dressing them up with AI and an absurd number of emojis, you keep the focus, your texts stay natural and they look less like AI.

## Where formatted text works

- **The hook of your post.** The first line decides whether someone keeps reading. Set in bold, it has the best chance in the feed.
- **Subheadings.** In longer posts, two or three highlighted lines visibly organise the text.
- **Comments.** An emphasised keyword lifts your reply out of a long thread.
- **Company pages.** The same approach works on Company Pages as on your personal profile.
- **Other networks.** Because it is ordinary Unicode, the same text also works on X, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, in Slack or in an email subject line.

## Where you are better off without it

- **Headline and job title.** LinkedIn search does not find 𝗦𝗘𝗢 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 when someone searches for SEO consulting. Keywords belong in normal letters.
- **The About section as a whole.** Individual bold subheadings are fine; fully formatted running text costs you findability.
- **Entire paragraphs.** When everything is highlighted, nothing stands out any more.
- **Job applications and job adverts.** Many systems do not read Unicode variants cleanly.
- **Company names and technical terms** that others should be able to find via search.
- **Emojis**: one or two emojis at most … otherwise it looks like AI slop

## Why formatted posts get read more

Formatting is not an end in itself. It changes how many people stop in the feed and how much of your message sticks.

                                                        You break the pattern

The LinkedIn feed is a wall of identical-looking text. A bold first line breaks that pattern and gives the eye an anchor point.

                                                        Your post becomes scannable

Most people skim first and read afterwards. Short paragraphs and highlighted key statements make that skimming easy.

                                                        People read for longer

Whoever clicks “see more” after two lines stays longer. This dwell time is one of the signals LinkedIn uses to decide who else gets to see your post.

                                                        You come across as careful

A tidy post shows that someone has made an effort. For content seen by clients, partners or applicants, that pays directly into your credibility.

## Frequently asked questions about the LinkedIn text formatter

How do I make text bold on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn itself has no bold button. You write your text in the formatter at the top of this page, select the part you want, click Bold and copy the result. In your LinkedIn post, paste it with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V.

Yes. You need no account, no sign-up and no installation. The conversion runs entirely in your browser; your text is never sent to a server.

Does it also work in comments and on my profile?

Yes. Wherever you can type text on LinkedIn, pasted Unicode text works too: posts, comments, messages, headline, About section and experience. For profile fields, however, the search limitation applies.

Why doesn’t LinkedIn search find my formatted text?

The search compares character by character. To the index, a bold 𝗪 is a different character from a normal W. Anything that should be found therefore belongs in normal letters.

Why do some people only see empty boxes?

An empty box means the device lacks the right font for that character. This mainly happens with decorative styles such as Fraktur or double-struck on older devices. Bold and italic are the safest variants.

Does formatted text hurt my reach?

Formatting as such is not penalised by LinkedIn. Indirectly, it can hurt if you replace keywords that should be found, or if a fully formatted post becomes hard to read and readers drop off.

                                    Is formatted text accessible?

No. Screen readers often read Unicode variants out one by one as character names or skip them altogether. So apply formatting only to individual words and subheadings, never to the whole text.

Yes. The Normalise button converts selected Unicode characters back into normal letters. That is handy when you are recycling an old post or cleaning up text from an external source.

Yes. Since it is standard Unicode, you can use the same text on X, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, in WhatsApp, Slack, Notion or in email subject lines.

3,000 characters. Formatted letters often count double or triple because internally they consist of several code units. If you are close to the limit, format sparingly.

## What formatted text can’t do

Unicode formatting is a trick, not an official LinkedIn feature. There are four things you should know before using it.

**Screen readers can’t cope with it.** Read-aloud software reads the special characters out individually as Unicode names or skips them entirely. A fully formatted post is practically unreadable for blind and visually impaired people. For us this is the most important point on this list, hence the clear recommendation: format individual words, never whole messages. How we approach the topic as a whole is described on our accessibility page.

**LinkedIn search ignores the characters.** The index compares character by character. To it, a bold 𝗪 is a different character from a normal W. Anything someone might search for therefore belongs in normal letters.

**Not every device shows every character.** If a device lacks the right font, an empty box appears. With bold and italic this hardly happens any more; with Fraktur, double-struck and circled letters it happens far more often.

**Formatted text uses up more characters.** Many Unicode variants occupy more than one character unit internally. With 3,000 characters per post, the limit is reached faster than the look suggests.
