Why an English-language version can be a GEO lever
<?xml encoding="UTF-8">
On Clutch, the large international review platform for agencies, our profile ranks somewhere around 1,350. No one scrolls that far. An AI does: at the beginning of August, we received an inquiry from Canada, and when we asked how the client had found an agency in Waren (Müritz) of all places, the answer was: Claude had recommended us. The AI probably collected our Clutch profile and then checked our website. There, it found an English-language version and a structure machines can read; an external Agent-Ready check currently gives 4eck-media.de 100 out of 100 points. We were invisible to people at rank 1,300. To the machine, we were a match.

The point is this: we were commissioned to carry out a GEO audit as the starting point for an offer covering the full GEO measures. The job of improving a company’s AI visibility therefore came from an AI recommendation itself. It is hard to imagine a more fitting practical example for GEO, which is exactly why we are telling the story here.

We have a hypothesis that works as a GEO hack for German websites: there is an English bias, and an English-language version is a small GEO lever for German websites, even if hardly any people visit the English page.

<picture>

</picture>

Mechanism 1: AI searches differently than you ask

When you ask ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini a question, your wording does not have to be passed on literally to web search. AI search systems can formulate their own search queries, perform multiple search steps and refine their queries based on results already found. In the search step, “Which companies in Germany offer industrial insulation?” can theoretically become “industrial insulation companies Germany.”

Here is an example of Gemini’s reasoning steps:

<picture>

</picture>

This basic mechanism is even documented for ChatGPT Search: OpenAI describes how a user’s question is typically rewritten into one or more more targeted search queries and how additional searches can arise as the process unfolds. Whether a German specialist query actually turns into an English query depends on the specific case and is not a documented automatic process. At the very least, this creates the possibility of an additional English-language retrieval path. For many specialist topics, there is simply more and better-linked material in English. A website that also exists in English can therefore be found for English-language search queries as well.

Mechanism 2: The bias is built into the retrieval systems themselves

The second mechanism has been researched more thoroughly and is even more fundamental because it works without a translated search query. AI search systems work in several stages: a retriever gathers candidate documents, a reranker sorts them by relevance, and only then does the language model formulate the answer. The bias lies precisely in these intermediate steps.

A study from Chung-Ang University in Seoul systematically measured the language preferences of these systems. The result: retrievers prefer documents in the language of the query and in high-resource languages. English is the special case. English documents almost always receive the highest preference scores, sometimes even higher than documents in the language of the query itself. The authors attribute this to training data, which is predominantly English.

A second study titled “All Languages Matter” quantified the effect: in the common BGE reranker, around 60 per cent of selected documents are concentrated in exactly two languages, English and the language of the query. All other languages share the remainder. In the experimental setup, measured answer quality rose by 12.9 to 20 points, depending on the model, when evidence was selected better than in the original selection.

For research, this bias is a problem to be solved. For website operators, it is initially information: anyone present in both preferred languages occupies both slots kept open by the system. A German website with an English-language version covers the query language for German queries and at the same time serves the models’ structural preference for English.

Mechanism 3: English shapes the internal representations of many models

The third finding comes from basic research. A team at EPFL Lausanne examined with Llama 2 which language multilingual models use internally. In simplified terms, it showed an abstract conceptual space that is closer to English than to the other languages studied. A more recent study of models such as Llama 3.1, Gemma 2, Mixtral and Aya likewise found indications of English-centric internal representations, particularly for semantically important words. The effect is model-dependent, however, and does not justify the sweeping statement that every modern language model fundamentally “thinks in English.” In line with this, a Basque-Spanish research group showed that models can yield better results when they first translate non-English tasks into English themselves. They called the effect Self-Translate.

And a third paper, aptly titled “Faux Polyglot,” describes the consequences for information retrieval: when information is unavailable in the user’s language, models preferentially resort to the highest-resource language, English. Content that exists in English therefore has a second entry ticket into answers that are formulated in entirely different languages.

What citation studies show in practice

Laboratory research is one thing. There are now analyses of real AI answers too. An analysis of 6,844 citations in Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT shows that the language of the query is the strongest factor in determining which sources are cited, far stronger than the user’s country. Those who ask in German receive predominantly German-language sources. That is one half of the truth, and it means: the German website remains the foundation; there is no way around it.

The other half comes from a study of AI chatbots as news intermediaries: even for questions about non-English news, English Wikipedia was the most cited individual source worldwide, and nine of the ten most cited domains were English-language. English content therefore seeps into answers that have nothing to do with English queries.

Together, both findings produce exactly the picture our hypothesis paints: German for customers and the German query. English additionally for the retrieval space in which models collect their sources.

What we do with this ourselves

We are testing the thesis in practice. Our own agency website now exists in English, French and Polish, and we have built English-language versions for clients such as Schloss Torgelow, Kurpfalz-Internat, Royal Tandoor, IVS Isolierung and WMH Herion, even though their most important market remains German-speaking. We do not expect large volumes of English-speaking visitors there. The English pages are primarily for machines: so that services, products and connections are discoverable and citable in a second language context.

<picture>

</picture>

The effort is manageable today. With AI-assisted translation, clean hreflang markup and a workflow that automatically translates new content, an additional language version costs a fraction of what it did five years ago. Professional review remains essential: especially the technical terms you want to be found for must be translated correctly. “Industrielle Isolierung” must be “industrial insulation,” not some machine-generated language mishmash.

The honest limitations

Three points are part of the truth. First: the cited studies primarily examine laboratory pipelines with Wikipedia corpora, not production systems such as ChatGPT Search. The transferability is plausible, but not strictly proven. Second: German is itself a high-resource language. The English advantage also exists over German, but is smaller than it is over smaller languages. Those writing for the German market do not lose their basis for survival without an English version; they forgo an additional channel. Third: research is actively working to reduce this bias. Both RAG studies already propose countermeasures. The lever therefore probably has an expiry date. In our view, that argues for using it now while it works. We have benefited from inquiries from Switzerland, Austria, Dubai, Japan and Canada because we were recommended by AI. We do not rule out that our English-language pages played a small role in that.
{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"Is an English-language version worthwhile even if I have only German customers?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Yes, with realistic expectations. Technically, clean hreflang markup is part of it, so search systems associate the language versions correctly and no duplicate-content confusion arises.

                                        <use href="#default-angle-right"></use>

Do I have to translate the entire website?

                                        <use href="#default-angle-right"></use>

No. Start with the pages that describe your services, your company and your references, because AI systems cite precisely from these when recommending providers. Are your services relevant to international prospects, even if only as a supplier or partner? And does your company appear in AI answers when you ask in English about your service and your region? You can test the final point yourself in five minutes: ask ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini once in German and once in English about the best providers in your industry in your region.

If you do not show up in this test: that is exactly why we exist.
