WordPress MultiSite in practice: manage multiple websites efficiently with one backend

Table of contents

Many companies face the same challenge: multiple websites, multiple domains, different content … and it all has to be maintained, updated and operated securely. Every change, update and maintenance costs time and money. Especially when each website runs on its own system. The consequences are high effort, rising costs and often inconsistent content.

This is exactly where WordPress MultiSite comes into play. With this solution, you can run several websites in a single WordPress system. Instead of managing each domain separately, there is one central interface from which all sites are controlled. Here, for example, you can see how we connected five domains and five websites to one WordPress installation as a MultiSite system.

The advantages of the WordPress MultiSite system

The advantages for the customer and for us as the supporting agency are obvious.

  • Central administration: maintain updates, plugins and themes only once.
  • Consistent content: Content or structures can be easily aligned across all websites.
  • Only one system needs to be maintained instead of many systems. Less maintenance means lower costs.
  • Each website can still have its own design, content, and domain. This is a particular advantage, as it allows for design differences, as shown in the following image of the MultiSite system for tourism websites from K&K.

Practical examples from us: Real customer projects

We at 4eck Media have already implemented several MultiSite projects and experienced the benefits in practice.

  • ElbMed Prignitz: A multi-site system for five different domains. All content is managed centrally but tailored to the respective target group. Additional websites from the portfolio will be added to the system in the coming year.
  • K&K Vacation Properties: Five tourism websites in one MultiSite system. Each site highlights a specific travel destination, but they are all managed via a shared backend.
  • Dr. Felix Handy: Two websites in one system—one for the dental practice and one specializing in oral surgery and dental implants. Both sites are individually designed but run technically on a single system. See the following image:

These examples show: MultiSite is not only exciting for corporations or large brands, but also for SMEs, tourism companies or doctors who want to present several specializations. We are currently working on two more customers who are getting a WordPress MultiSite system developed by us. One is an elite boarding school here in the region, which also runs a sister school in southern Germany … we are just a few weeks away from going live – a blog post will follow. On the other hand, we are developing a multi-site solution with five websites for a local tax and business consultancy. And for our valued existing client K&K Ferienimmobilien, we will soon be connecting the sixth destination to the existing WordPress MultiSite system.

The MultiSite system implemented by 4eck Media is brilliant in my opinion. All of our websites are located in one central place in a single backend. Now, my colleagues and I can easily maintain the content. Maintenance costs have also decreased for us as customers because only one system needs to be kept up to date instead of five. I highly recommend it!
